Ventilation
Certain vegetables can produce unpleasant odors over time, while some fruits emit ethylene gas, which accelerates ripening and can lead to rot. This makes proper air circulation essential in your root cellar.
Don’t underestimate the importance of effective ventilation when designing your space. The key is to ensure that the system is both monitored and adjustable.
A simple approach is to place an intake vent near the ground and an exhaust vent near the ceiling, allowing air to flow naturally—cool air will sink while warmer air rises. For a more advanced setup, consider installing adjustable grates or a fan in the exhaust vent.
Make the most of your ventilation system by positioning ethylene-producing items closer to the exhaust and cooler-storing items nearer to the intake. Also, keep crates elevated off the floor and ensure there’s ample space between them to promote airflow.
