Root Cellar – Things to avoid

While a root cellar is ideal for storing fresh, raw produce, it’s not suitable for canned or boxed foods unless you have separate compartments.

For one, canned goods can rust, and dry foods don’t fare well in humid environments. Therefore, it’s also advisable to avoid storing dried beans and grains in the root cellar unless they are in airtight containers. You can purchase silica packets online to help absorb moisture in these containers, or simply find a cool, dry spot in your home for them.

However, produce isn’t the only item that thrives in the unique conditions of a root cellar. Imagine having a rack of wine bottles aging there, too. Beers, ciders, and other bottled beverages also benefit from the cool, dark environment.

Cured and smoked meats can last for a long time in a root cellar, provided the temperature stays below 40°F. In fact, at those cool temperatures, you can successfully store milk, cheeses, and other dairy products as well.
