Root Cellar Storage Conditions – Lighting

Designating an area for your root cellar may be the simplest task, but creating the ideal storage conditions requires careful planning and a bit of creativity.

Lighting

Many foods can sprout or spoil when exposed to light for extended periods. Therefore, it’s important to keep your root cellar as dark as possible when it’s not in use. When you do need light, you can choose a style that suits your taste, from elaborate to straightforward.

While a crystal chandelier might look elegant among your stored goods, most of us will likely settle for a single, unshaded light bulb. If your root cellar isn’t wired for electricity, don’t worry—there are plenty of battery-operated lighting options available. Although I prefer bright lighting for inspecting my stored items, a simple flashlight will also do the trick.
