Root Cellar – Insulation

Insulation

While it can be challenging to maintain the ideal temperature and humidity levels in your root cellar, adding insulation can provide valuable support. The type of insulation you choose is entirely up to you.

To start, line the bottom of your storage container with about an inch of insulation, then layer in your produce, leaving a quarter inch of space between each layer. While root vegetables can touch each other slightly, be sure to leave one to three inches of space between the produce and the container’s sides.

Some effective insulation materials include:

  • Shredded paper
  • Newspaper
  • Sawdust
  • Peat moss
