If we can be proactive instead of reactive when it comes to preparing, not only will be prepared, but you won’t have the stress and anxiety your neighbors experience.

FOOD – If the power goes out for a day or two you, you can probably scrounge something in the back of the cabinets to get by. If the power goes out for any longer than that, you’ll be fighting locals at the grocery store having something that you can store for years on end and break into occasionally is the way to go.

COOKING SUPPLIES – What if you had to cook for a few days or longer without the conveniences of your kitchen? Do you have an existing barbecue or grill? What about propane? You might have a fire pit that you could convert to cook food on as well.

LIGHTS. Everyone has a single flashlight or lantern that you could carry from room to room, but think, in this moment do you know where it is? Does your family? Do you have a spare flashlight or lantern? It’s all about have having emergency lights that you always know where they are and have easy access to.

BATTERIES– You can’t lights without batteries. Ensure you have an extras, and make sure they are constantly disappearing for remotes or toys. Having a supply that if for emergencies provide a serious amount of relief when the time comes.

HEATING – if you have a fireplace with wood, you’re set. Just make sure you have. A means to start your fire and plenary of fuel. If you don’t have a fireplace or don’t want to worry about having enough wood on hand take a look at space heaters. Make sure you consider safety with these one, even ones rated for indoors get really hot and can buy, melt plastic and cause problems. Remember, you’re not heating the house, you just trying to stay warm.

Let’s hope the plumbing is working, should be up for a while, even if the grid goes down, but that’s obviously something to keep in the back of your mind.

BACK UP POWER
Most everyone thinks of generators when we say back up power. They have come a long way in a short while. Check out this one, not only is it on wheel and easy to move, but you can power it with gasoline or propane. Just ensure you don’t use it inside and only in a ventilated area.
Also consider power banks, you don’t want to have to start the generator just to charge your phone.

FIRST AID
You can get as simple or complicated as you want with the first aid kit, you may have special needs or concerns. When it comes down to it, you need some regular Band-Aids, and maybe gauze and tape. You don’t have to get too crazy unless you have situation that dictates otherwise.

COMMUNICATIONS We already addressed charging your phone with a solar bank, but for those that need something else if the cell towers or WiFi is unavailable, satellite phones are always an options. Then prepaid ones are more convenient because a use you don’t have the monthly fee, but you have the flexibility to change that if you want.

Lastly, you might not have regular trash pick ups right away, ensure you have some extra durable garbage bags until things get back to normal.
